Ghaliya Al-Assas, a student at Al Hussein Technical University (HTU), won first place in the “Jusoori” Space Architecture Challenge, for her outstanding design of the futuristic “Jusoori” facility for space research and experiments in Wadi Rum—a project envisioned to simulate extraterrestrial habitats applicable to future missions on other planets.
Her winning project, titled “The Portal: Between Jordan and Space,” symbolizes the experience of passing through a gateway to outer space — a stopover for conducting research and experiments before entering the vast realm beyond Earth. The conceptual foundation of the design envisions “Jusoori” as the gateway bridging Earth and space, serving as a hub for advanced exploration and innovation reminiscent of futuristic science fiction worlds.
The design incorporates all functional and technical requirements for a space research center located in Wadi Rum, an environment often described as the closest analogue to Mars on Earth, making it an ideal site for experimentation and simulation of extraterrestrial conditions.
The “Jusoori” initiative aims to connect space research and development with sustainable growth, creating opportunities for Jordanian youth to explore careers and innovation in the emerging space sector. The initiative also seeks to engage students in space-related design competitions, offering them the chance to apply their creativity and technical skills to real-world challenges inspired by space exploration.
